Chapter Eight

It felt like a thousand butterflies were fluttering inside Wyatt’s stomach. A mixture of nervousness, some form of nausea, and a little bit of curiosity filled his mind.

His mate was right beside him, holding his hand. Zachary was busy looking through the many titles in the bookcases that surrounded the alpha’s office. Alpha Aiden was seated on his chair, in front of the desk, tenting his fingers. His eyebrows were furrowed and he pursed his lips. There was a lot on Aiden’s mind.

Wyatt was sorry he ever dragged trouble into Hidden Lake.

The doors swung open, interrupting whatever pity party Wyatt was about to throw himself. And just in time, too, he thought to himself. I don’t really want to think about any of this right now.

Elijah Blanchard-Derringer was Zachary’s mate, and in contrast to the big lug, he didn’t have that same warmth or sparkle that his mate had. Whereas Zachary was basically a giant, warm teddy bear of a man, Elijah was more like the frigid ice king you met in school. Unfriendly, unwavering in his cold glare, with a frosty expression that showed just how superior he was as a human being in contrast to the people around him, he didn’t know if anyone embodied the idea of opposites attracting more than Elijah and Zachary.

For such a petite man, Wyatt felt a thrum of danger in each exact, poised movement he made. It was as though he had a ballerina’s control of his body, which gave him a delicate, albeit deadly sort of grace as he walked. His eyes were dull and icy and almost the color of slate, seemingly completely bored as he walked in and stared at the people in the room.

Still, however, he gave a respectful bow to the alpha.

Aiden didn’t seem at all fazed at how Elijah acted. The dark-haired youth stood there with his arms crossed in a guarded gesture, and the tiniest hint of an amused smile as he looked at Wyatt, and then Liam.

“Alpha, Head Enforcer,” Elijah said, acknowledging the men present, but barely glancing at his mate except for the slightest of smirks. His voice was crisp, if a little weary. “Mister Sanford. I’m Elijah. I’m so pleased to finally meet you.”

“Your expertise on the subject matter should help us heavily, Elijah,” Aiden said, leaning forward with a squeak of his chair. “You know these problems better than any of us.”

“Do I?” Elijah asked, his voice airy as though he hadn’t even considered the question. Wyatt’s eyebrow twitched in irritation, and he swore the dark-haired beauty of a man smirked, like he noticed. It was like he knew some sort of secret, contradicting the nonchalant tone of his question.

Shit, Wyatt thought to himself. This guy is good.

When Elijah aimed a long look at Liam, Wyatt felt his mate freeze in place for the briefest of seconds, maybe in fear.

Liam gulped. Wyatt raised his eyebrow in question, watching his mate intently as the wolf shifter fidgeted.

Liam was hiding something. Elijah knew about it.
